School Projects 2007 - 2008

  • Creative Partnerships
  • Music
  • Active Playgrounds
  • International School Award

Last year we were awarded a grant from the Creative Partnerships team in Sunderland to fund a project within school. Our project was to make a series of short films with an anti-bullying theme.

As we have never made a film before we knew that we would need lots of training on writing a script, acting and filming techniques.

To help us with our drama and acting, including using stage directions, we have had visitors from the Royal Shakespeare Company and from Theatre Kappa Pi. Miss Askew has also been running Drama workshops after school.

We investigated how to write and read a script, and we had lots of practise at this during our Literacy work in class.

Music:

To support creativity and enjoyment within school we encourage the children at St. Michael's to learn to play a mucical instrument. Children in Years One and Two can learn the violin. Children in Year Four can learn to play the guitar. Children in Year Five can learn to play the guitar, the flute or the clarinet! We'll have our own school orchestra soon!

Active Playgrounds:

Exercise and activity are essential to a healthy life, and we begin learning this from our first day here at St. Michael's. Our playgrounds are busy, active places where there is always something fun to do! We have a climbing wall, an adventure playground, a play area for our Reception class and we have a selection of toys and games that we can play with on the yard. These toys are provided by our parents collecting vouchers from either Tesco's or Sainsbury's. Our School Council helps to decide what games and toys would be good fun, and they are responsible for ordering these.

We are also training up some Young Leaders to over-see the playground games; make sure no-one is hurt or lonely, and make sure the toys are used and put away carefully. Mr Fisher from St. Robert's School is currently working with our Year 6 Young Sports Leaders to organise this. Also, we have a quiet area with benches in case you want to relax with a book, in summer we bring our packed lunches out here to eat in the sunshine.

International School Award:

This is awarded to schools which promote awareness and interaction with the global community. We have already achieved the Foundation Stage of this award through our charity work links with Vakighol in India, our Year 5 and Year 6 French lessons and our Brazilian dance group. We are seeking to build on this success by forming a partnership with a school in a different country.
