About our school...

Please use this map to find out where our school is.

There are currently approximately 200 children at St. Michaels and 25 members of staff, including 11 members of the teaching team.

Our new school building was opened in 2000. In 2003 the building was awarded the Northern Architectural Association Hadrian Award. Our parish priest, Fr. William O'Gorman laid the foundation stone for our new school building on 4th May 2000. The school was then opened and blessed by Bishop Ambrose Griffiths.

Although our building is new, there has been a St. Michael's school here in Houghton-le-Spring for over 100 years. Originally the school was housed in the basement of the church. This gradually expanded into buildings adjacent to the church and finally to our new site opposite the church.

Being so close to St. Michael's church is a very important part of our daily school lives. Each class celebrates their own mass every half term and we celebrate a whole school mass at least once each term. Fr. O'Gorman visits school twice a week to pray with the children and staff in our school chapel.

We are a 'one-form entry' school - this means that there is one class in each year. Children from St. Michael's usually come from Houghton, Hetton and Easington Lane and belong to the parishes of St. Michael's and St. Mary's.

Children usually join our school in Reception class and leave in Year 6, however lots of children have joined in different years. Jamie joined in Year 6 and he says "I feel like I've been here since Reception!"

Visitors always comment on how special our school is and the lovely family atmosphere we have here.
