The Talking Hat
One day my Mam took me to the riding shop to get a new hat since my other one had been ruined by the rain.

I was in the barn getting my horses feed when I heard a voice really it was sort of a mumble.

“Let me out of here”

I looked around and couldn’t seem to see anything when suddenly the box began to shake. I opened it and the hat spoke again. “What am I doing here? This place smells! Take me back to the nice shop immediately.”

“I have never heard of a talking hat” I replied.

“I am sorry that you don’t like it here but I need you to protect my head when I ride.”

“Ok I suppose that is what I was made for, but I want you to tidy this messy barn up.”

“Right what do you want me to do?” I asked.

“For a start move those smelly boots!”

“Ok I will sweep the barn as well, but then can we go out for a ride?”

“Yes I suppose it is a deal.” replied the hat.

I moved the boots and did the sweeping then I went down the field to get my horse Bracken. I put on the hat and off we went.

After a few minutes the hat said
“It’s not so bad up here I think I might enjoy this.”

Then it started to rain. The hat started moaning
“What is this?” it asked

“It’s rain” I replied.

“Well I’m not so sure about this!” it complained

“You will get used to it” I answered.


I could see that my life wasn’t going to be easy with this hat but not everyone has a talking hat so I suppose I am very lucky.

Found a balloon in our garden today (15 March), in Fulwood, Preston. I'm amazed it came so far!!! A little bit further and it would have made the coast and off out to sea, and then where? Ireland? America?

Just wanted to let you know I found one of your balloons whilst walking my dog. I found it on the beach, at Filey near Scarborough, it was in the sea and got washed up on the incoming tide.

I went for a walk in the sunshine today, and found a big purple balloon stuck in the long grass. Guess what! It was the furthest yet! It was at grid reference SE859688; you'd better ask Mrs Horn where that is - she's good at geography. I'll give you a clue: it's about halfway between a City beginning with Y and a Seaside Town beginning with S. I let it go again. Is that allowed? It went very high.
