Year Two's Visit to the National Glass Centre

We designed our own Sand  Casts using different shapes and colours. Some of us made sea creatures using ideas from the Art Exhibitions we had just seen in the Gallery. Then Steve showed us how to make the casts using sand and different colours.

Once our designs were completed we took them into the Workshop where the REALLY HOT furnaces were. Then Colin poured liquid glass from the furnace onto our casts. Liquid glass is EXTREMELY hot - it is heated to just over 1000 degrees! No wonder we took our jumpers off! The liquid glass begins to cool straight away and our casts were put into the kiln so that they didn't cool too quickly and crack.
Then we watched a demonstration of glass blowing. The liquid glass was moving all of the time and the glass blower was very careful to mould the liquid glass into the right shape and colour - she made a beautiful bowl in front of our eyes. We were so impressed, we gave her a round of applause! Next she asked us some questions and Aine got the answer right so she got to have a try at blowing glass herself. Can you see the enormous glass bubble Aine blew?
